Rivian Automotive and Volkswagen Group have agreed plans for a 50:50 joint venture to create next-generation electrical architecture and class-leading software technology.
Core to this strategic partnership is the acceleration of development of software for both manufacturers. Combining their complementary strengths, Rivian and Volkswagen aim to lower the cost per vehicle by increasing scale and accelerating innovation globally.
Volkswagen plans on utilising Rivian’s existing electrical architecture and software platform in the short term to progress its software-defined vehicle (SDV) plans, as well as invest $5 billion into Rivian in the coming years. Customers can expect to get their hands on vehicles benefitting from the technology created within this partnership in the second half of the decade.
