GM, a leader in autonomous vehicles, is partnering with Honda to introduce driverless ride-hailing services in Japan.
The joint venture plans to launch a new company in early 2026, deploying Cruise's purpose-built shuttle, the Origin, with plans for around 500 shuttles in central Tokyo. Cruise's experience in dense US urban markets positions them well for the Japanese initiative. The Cruise Origin is expected to debut in the US in 2024. However, the profitability of robotaxi operations remains uncertain, with challenges like traditional ride-hailing models.
