GAC has introduced a groundbreaking 2.0-litre combustion engine running on liquid ammonia.
Showcased at GAC’s annual technology event and generating 161hp, the engine emits 90% less carbon dioxide compared to petrol. While ammonia is already explored in trucking and shipping, GAC has pioneered its application in passenger cars. Despite lower energy density than petrol, ammonia combustion produces no carbon, hydrocarbon, or CO2 emissions. However, challenges include ammonia's toxicity and its potential nitrogen emissions in non-optimised engines, signaling both promise and risks in advancing this alternative fuel technology.
